Once again we find ourselves on the verge of resounding success or complete failure for television: Avatar the Last Airbender.
Continuing to capitalize on its audience’s most beloved memories, Netflix is now behind one of the most fan- and critically-acclaimed series since the 2000s. Regarded by many one of the best anime of all time: Avatar the Last Airbender (ATLA).
The production was announced several years ago amid news and controversy over the casting and the creative and narrative decisions made for this new version.
The beginnings of Avatar
The first version of Avatar the Last Airbender (2005) aired on Nickelodeon until 2008, consisted of three seasons and was written by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko.
With an A rating, it is one of the few Programs suitable for almost every audience which deal with topics such as Warthe ATeaching and freedom of choice. It has received a dozen awards and its popularity has allowed it to develop an expanded universe with a variety of comics (some of which are still running), prequels, sequels, etc Spin-offs.
The new version
Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024) on Netflix was developed by Albert Kim. He is also credited as an executive producer alongside Dan Lin, Lindsey Liberatore, Michael Goi, Roseanne Liang and Jabbar Raisani.
When the first official announcement was made in 2018, the original creators, DiMartino and Konietzko, were listed as the Showrunner and executive producers of the project. Despite it, They gave up just a year laterciting creative differences and an uninspiring and negative environment.
With all the context out of the way, we can finally talk about the first taste of the new Red Giant remake Streaming:
To have a successful start, a work must be enticing, attractive and Interesting. And what’s more impressive than being thrown straight into the heat of battle?
The opening scene of this renewed vision of “ATLA” is visually powerful and action-packed. The capture of an Earth Kingdom soldier escaping the Fire Nation hunt.
The camera language is dynamic and detailed and enables a high-contrast play of shadows and highlights. But above all, I would like to highlight one of the characteristics that should be showcased the most in fights: control over the Article.
Some differences between the animated version and the live-action remake of Avatar: The Last Airbender

In this new version, when Aang learns of his devastating responsibility, he doesn’t immediately run away from it. Rather, he takes some time to process it and makes it clear as he walks away that he just wants to think about it for a moment away from the temple. This introduces us to a more serious Aang, less willing to play, have fun and enjoy his childhood; Taking away one of the most important characteristics of the last airbender.
This change persists for the rest of the episode, in Aang’s fighting style and his interactions (or lack thereof) with other characters. That being said, Cormier’s performance is good, but can seem a bit weak in certain moments (particularly when the protagonist’s face appears to be computer-animated in one of the character’s most emotional scenes).
The characters and the cast
The other two most recurring characters, Katara (Kiawentiio) and Sokka (Ian Ousley) retain certain characteristics of their animated counterparts, but are treated the same as Aang. Katara feels like a washed-out recovery, lacking the fortitude and tenacity that made her so popular. Sokka, on the other hand, is portrayed from the start as the strict and sensible boy, with the compassion and joking nature that characterize him.
In relation to Prince Zuko (Dallas Liu), considered by many to be the fan-favorite “ATLA” character and one of the best-written in animated series history; It is to be expected that anyone wearing his version would feel tremendous pressure Live action to live. Nevertheless, in his first brief appearance on screen, Liu does an excellent job of embodying the ideas and personality of Fire Lord Ozai’s banished son.

This is one of the most anticipated performances of the series, and the actor’s body language, athleticism and cheeky facial expressions do not disappoint. I would even venture to say that the tone of voice is similar to the recognizable original voice actor in English. Dante Basco.
Another important interpretation of the first episode is that of General Iroh, Zuko’s uncle. There’s not much to say about him at the moment. It’s difficult to judge the performance based on the limited lines he was given, but I’m happy to say that some of the cartoon character’s predominant traits have been retained, such as his love of tea, good manners and his prudence.
The production
The makeup, costumes, and visual effects departments put great effort into bringing to life the clothing, hairstyles, and locations that gave soul to Avatar’s world.
The quality of the production is evident, one can argue that the decisions made in these areas so far have been correct and faithful to the source material.
The CGI looks good, photorealistic and fantastic at the same time. However, I would say that it could be better combined with practical special effects in certain parts, such as this opening Explanation of the “ATLA” universe, some fights and the aforementioned Aang scene.
The Netflix version does its best to adapt a series of 61 23-minute episodes, beloved by fans and critics and full of incredible characters and a rich story, into just eight chapters of less than an hour.
It’s not an easy task, but if the team behind it has actually shown something, then it’s promising. The. This first taste is promising. It has succeeded in instilling a desire to see how they face the biggest challenges that lie ahead. We have to keep an eye on them.
