Sony’s PS5 became the first home console to surpass Nintendo Switch sales in the United States. BigN’s hybrid machine had remained number 1 in the territory for 33 straight months, without even being worried about the launch of the PS5 and Xbox Series X.
As we know, the Nintendo Switch enjoys unfailing popularity, as evidenced by its sales figures. In August 2021, the Nintendo Switch overtook the PS3 and Xbox 360 with no less than 89 million units sold worldwide. It must be said that the console has met with tremendous success in many markets, especially in the United States where it has been the best seller for 33 consecutive months.
And against all odds, the PS5 dethroned the Switch on the North American market in September 2021, ending the reign of Nintendo’s console for a time. “The Playstation 5 was the best-selling hardware platform of the month of September, both in units and in dollars ”, says Mat Piscatella, director of the NPD Group research firm.

“The Playstation 5 is the best-selling hardware platform since the start of the year in dollars, while the Nintendo Switch leads the units ”, also recalls the frame. It should be noted that the work of the NPD Group concerns only the North American market and therefore leaves aside the results of the European and Asian markets.
Unfortunately, the NPD Group does not go into more detail. It is therefore difficult to know if Sony simply managed to ship more consoles than its competitor in September, or if demand weakened in September 2021 as the new Nintendo Switch OLED approaches. Either way, it is highly likely that Nintendo will regain its leading position in the US market with the announced box of the OLED Switch. The new variant of the Switch is being emulated, the Switch OLED being already out of stock at the vast majority of resellers.
As a reminder, the PS5 remains for now the Sony console that has sold the fastest, since it reached 10 million copies sold in just 9 months. In fact, it has overtaken the PS4, for which it took 39 weeks to exceed this symbolic bar.
