The pope defends conscientious objection to abortions as a “loyal gesture”

The pope today defended conscientious objection among health workers in abortion cases, such as "a loyal gesture" with the profession and even "a complaint of an injustice", in his speech to participants at a meeting of the Italian Society of Hospital Pharmacy.

Francisco reiterated again his condemnation of abortion. "They know that I am very clear: it is a homicide and it is not lawful to be an accomplice", he stressed.

He explained that the "human life service" has to be the main value of the toilets and that "this can lead in some cases to conscientious objection", which, underlined "It is not disloyalty, but on the contrary, it is loyalty to your profession, if it is validly motivated".

"It is also a denunciation of the injustices against an innocent and defenseless life"he added.

In these cases "the duty is to be close to people, especially women, so that the solution to abortion is not thought about, because in reality it is not the solution", according to the pontiff.

On the other hand, Francisco stressed the importance of having a national public health system, "essential element to guarantee the common good and social growth of a country".

"Health strategies, oriented towards the search for justice and the common good, must be economically and ethically sustainable"added.

And he urged pharmacists to pay attention to "the management of resources and attention not to waste what is entrusted to the hands of each pharmacist" because it is a topic "not only economic but also ethical".
