According to a statement from the Holy See Press Office, Pope Francis canceled his engagements on Saturday morning due to a mild flu-like illness.
The statement indicated that the decision was taken as a precautionary measure. Last week, the pope took part in the spiritual exercises of Lent, a time of the liturgical year dedicated to prayer and remembrance. Pope Francis has emphasized the importance of a personal experience of the annual retreat for himself and his staff in the Roman Curia.
Last week, all of the pope’s engagements were suspended, including Wednesday’s general audience. The resumption of papal appointments was scheduled for today.
