The government of Palestine announced his resignation after countless criticism of the violence and war situation in the Gaza Strip.
Since the start of the Gaza war between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, 88-year-old President Mahmoud Abbas has been widely criticized for his “impotence” in the face of Israeli bombings in the Gaza Strip and the resurgence of violence in the occupied West Bank.
“This decision comes in the wake of political, security and economic developments related to the aggression against our people in the Gaza Strip,” said Mohammed Shtayyeh, Prime Minister of Palestine.
Since 2007, the Palestinian leadership has been divided between Abbas’s Palestinian Authority, which has limited power in the occupied West Bank, and Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip.
The executive’s resignation comes after countries in the region and several Western governments called for reform of the Palestinian Authority, which could have long-term jurisdiction over the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
