The Outer Worlds 2 Director Balances RPG Complexity, Player Freedom, Accessibility

True role-playing game fans crave freedom. They want to make their own choices in how they play. It turns out, the creative director behind the upcoming game The Outer Worlds 2 fully agrees with this idea.

Brandon Alder, who leads the creative vision for The Outer Worlds 2, recently shared his thoughts. He told Gamesradar+ that he really loves deep, complex systems in RPGs. He likes games that offer many layers of choices for players to explore.

Alder explained that creating these detailed systems comes from Obsidian’s past experience. Obsidian, the team developing The Outer Worlds series, pushed the first game to be very intricate. However, they learned an important lesson about balance. The game shouldn’t be too complicated right at the start. This keeps new players from feeling overwhelmed. The real depth and complexity should appear as players get further into the game. The developers want to reward those who truly dig into the game’s mechanics.

“If you enjoy playing stealth, you’ll find plenty of ways to do just that,” Alder said. “You can really focus on hiding and sneaking. But if you prefer to fight head-on and cause chaos, you won’t ever need to worry about stealth.”

Alder wrapped up by stating, “We love giving players lots of choices for how they play the game. But to do that, the game needs to be simple to pick up at first. The more complex options should become available later, once players are ready for them.”
