On Thursday, February 7, 2008 at the Cibao stadium, the Licey was proclaimed champion of the Caribbean Series by beating the Águilas 8 – 2, counting on the great work of Ramón Ortiz, who entered the fourth act in substitution of José Chaplain.
Ortiz launched five great episodes to take the second victory of the series, both being against the Cibaeños. This was the tenth Caribbean crown achieved by the Tigers to raise their reign to 10 Caribbean titles. Another feat for the blues is that they became the first team to win a Caribbean Classic without having been champion of their country, since by finishing second in the 2007-08 winter tournament and as there is a paragraph that says in the Statutes of the Series that when a country does not attend it, the champion and runner-up teams of the host country must participate so as not to have uneven teams, this has happened with this action on three occasions in Mexico and Puerto Rico in 2003. The combined record was Licey 5-1, Águilas 3-3. Mexico and Venezuela finished with 2-4 each.
Ramón Ortiz, was selected as Most Valuable and at the same time as the All-Star right-hander and Arnaldo Muñoz was the left-handed pitcher, the other selected were, the catcher Matt Tupman, Mendy López, 1B, Rafael Furcal 2B, as third baseman was elected Luis Maza, from Venezuela, Tony Peña JR, shortstop, in the outfield were Nelson Cruz, del Licey, Selwyn Langaigne and Albino Contreras, both from the Venezuelan team and the designated one was Roberto Saucedo, who produced two home runs for Mexico against Licey to cause him his only loss in the series.
