The old days are back in Sri Lanka

Colombo: One would have thought that in the present era, the citizens of a country would have to go back to the last century and the cycle era would return, but in Sri Lanka this has now become a reality.

Sri Lanka, which until a few years ago was considered a stable country, but the wave of global inflation has crippled its economy, and today the country is in the grip of the worst economic crisis in history, has to buy oil. There are no dollars, and if there is oil, there are long queues, and citizens are queuing for hours to buy oil.

Talking to foreign media, 43-year-old female rickshaw driver Lasanda Dipti said that most of my work time is spent in the queue for refueling. You have to find more petrol.

“As soon as the petrol needle goes down, they turn to the gas station before taking a ride because they know what the conditions are there,” he said.

Bicycle service introduced

Authorities in Sri Lanka’s main port, on the other hand, have introduced a “free bicycle service” to save petrol. Sri Lanka Ports Authority chairman Prasantha Jayamna said shipping lines operating through the port had donated 100 bicycles to launch the service.

“The purpose of the bicycle service is to store petrol at the Colombo port,” he said. We have built a cycle track along the unused railway line for the convenience of those coming to the port so that they can use bicycles instead of other vehicles.
