The OECD cuts 0.6% to its global growth forecast for 2023

The world economy will grow 2.2% in 2023, the OECD said on Monday, which lowered its previous June forecast by six tenths, as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the rise in interest rates to contain inflation.

"A loss of economic momentum is visible globally, but especially in Europe"indicated the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), which maintains the world expansion unchanged at 3% in 2022.

The G20 countries would grow in 2023 at the same rate as the world economy (2.2%), after lowering their outlook six tenths compared to June.

Of these, the OECD lowers the forecast for Argentina by 1.5 points, which would grow 0.4% next year, after an estimated expansion of 3.6% in 2022 (without changes) and 10.4% in 2021.

In line with the forecasts of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in July, the Paris-based organization anticipates that Brazil will grow much more, 2.5% in 2022, almost two points more than predicted in June, and 0.8% in 2023 (-0.4 points).

Mexico, for its part, follows the same trend as the South American giant with an expansion of 2.1% this year (+0.2 points) and 1.5% in 2023 (-0.6 points compared to June).

The conflict in Ukraine should continue to hit the economy, especially due to its impact on energy and food prices. The OECD revised global inflation upwards to 8.2% in 2022 and 6.6% in 2023.

After an estimated contraction of 5.5% in 2022, the OECD slightly lowers its estimate for 2023 for Russia, whose economy would contract by 4.5% in 2023.

In addition to the effects of the war on prices, the rise in interest rates by central banks to contain inflation and the covid-19 pandemic are also weighing on the world economy, adds the OECD.
