The Organization of American States (OAS) has completed the deployment of its Electoral Observation Mission in Honduras with a view to the November 28 elections, and has asked political actors to collaborate to generate a "peaceful environment".
"The Mission reiterates its concern about the acts of violence that have taken place in the context of this electoral process and urges all political actors and citizens to contribute to creating an environment of peace that allows Hondurans to freely express their will. through vote", has expressed the agency in a statement.
Some of those sent to Honduras were already present at the simulation of the Transmission of Preliminary Electoral Results (TREP) system last Tuesday and in the coming days they will meet an agenda of meetings with electoral, government and civil authorities.
In this way, it will search "follow up on aspects related to electoral organization and technology, political participation of women, electoral justice, voting abroad, campaigns and freedom of expression and political financing".
However, it has valued the initiatives that both the electoral authorities and the organizers of civil society have developed aimed at generating a "civility pact and hold peaceful elections".
Composed of 91 specialists and observers of 22 nationalities who will be deployed in 17 of the 18 departments, the Mission has arrived in a staggered manner since November 12. The head of the mission, the former president of Costa Rica Luis Guillermo Solís will set foot on national territory this Tuesday.
After the elections, the OAS envoys will present a preliminary report with their "observations and recommendations", oriented to "contribute to the strengthening of electoral processes in Honduras".
This is already the twelfth electoral mission deployed in the Honduran nation and the OAS has valued the role of Spain, the United States, France, Italy, Mexico, Japan or Canada, among other countries, to carry it out.
EU MISSION
On the other hand, the head of the European Union Electoral Observation Mission, Zeljana Zovko, will return to Honduras this Monday to meet with electoral and civil authorities and representatives of the private sector.
The rest of the week, before the elections are held, Zovko will hold meetings with the candidates and other political actors, notes the Honduran daily ‘El Heraldo’.
Next Sunday, the EU mission will have more than 70 observers on the ground who will be in charge of sending reports to the electoral analysts.
