Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, e-commerce has grown significantly. An indicator of this growth is the number of online stores on platforms such as Shopify. Between March 2020 and January 2022, the number of ecommerce on Shopify grew by 201.53%.
2.5 million new stores
The Shopify eCommerce platform is a well-known platform for entrepreneurs who want to launch their online store. A survey of Genus AI reveals that between March 2020 and January 2022 the number of online stores on this platform increased by 201.53%. The platform added 2,594,798 new online stores in less than two years, with the majority of Shopify customers in the US.
In January 2022, the platform had 2,666,627 US online stores, which represents a growth of 178.53% compared to March 2020 (957,393 online stores at that time).
The number of European ecommerce on Shopify has also grown significantly. There are currently 156,466 online stores on Shopify in the UK. In addition, in France there are 59,590.
However, the number of customers in Germany increased by 480.18%, and the platform now operates 78,638 online stores from Germany, while in March 2020 there were only 13,554 stores. According to Genus AI, most of the sites newly added to Shopify consist of smaller businesses that aren’t equipped to compete with e-commerce giants like Amazon. These focus on customer satisfaction, secure and user-friendly websites for higher ratings. In this way, maintaining a wide customer base becomes easier and helps them compete with bigger players.
