In the search for a suitable successor for Xavi at the end of the season, FC Barcelona continues to explore the coaching market. Although Deco stated that they have not yet had discussions with any coach, they are still actively looking for a solid replacement to guarantee success in the coming seasons.
Among the names that have emerged, two trends seem to be gaining strength: the German and the Portuguese. Prominent names such as Klopp, Nagelsmann and Flick were mentioned in the field of German coaches, with Joan Laporta supporting this professional profile. On the other hand, Deco, the sports director, shows a preference for a Portuguese coach due to his affinity and knowledge.
The name of Sergio Conceiçao, who currently plays at Porto, has been mentioned the most, but another candidate has recently emerged: Rúben Amorim, who currently manages Sporting de Portugal. According to Esport 3, Barça has examined the possibility of signing Amorim for next season, who in turn would be enthusiastic about the idea of leading the Blaugrana team.
A termination clause that presents a problem
However, there is one major obstacle: Amorim’s release clause is €30 million and his contract with Sporting runs until 2026. This limits Barcelona’s options as the club is unwilling to pay compensation. This clause was introduced when Sporting de Portugal paid ten million euros to secure his release from Sporting de Braga.
At 39, Amorim is a relatively young coach, but has an impressive track record. This season they are aiming for their second league title after breaking a 19-year losing streak for Sporting de Portugal in the 2020-2021 season. He has also won three cups and one Super Cup in his country. Deco and Amorim’s relationship dates back to their time together in the Portuguese national team during the 2010 World Cup, and both shared a dressing room with former Blaugrana Abel Ruiz at Sporting Braga for several months.
