Jontay Porter Denied Permission to Play in Greece Amid Ongoing Legal Issues
Jontay Porter, a 24-year-old 2.11-meter power forward, has been denied permission to play for the Promitheas team in Greece. This decision comes after a judge handling his sports betting case refused to grant him a permit to sign with the team.
Porter pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges related to a betting scandal at two Raptors games in which he participated. As a result, he was expelled from the NBA in April and faces up to four years in prison.
Despite his legal troubles, Porter’s lawyers filed a document to have his US passport returned to him and modify his release to allow him to play in both the Greek League and the FIBA Basketball Champions League.
The Judge Remains Firm
The judge handling Porter’s case, LaShann DeArcy Hall, has been adamant in denying him permission to travel and play for Promitheas. Despite the prosecution’s failure to oppose the move, the judge has prevented Porter from leaving the United States.
Porter was released on $250,000 bail after pleading guilty and having his passport revoked. His sentence is scheduled for December 18, and he faces a sentence of between 41 and 51 months in prison.
Other Accused Parties
Four other men were charged in the same case for conspiracy to defraud a sports betting company. One of them bet $80,000 on a stock involving Porter’s statistics and won $1.1 million.
Porter’s situation highlights the ongoing legal issues surrounding his basketball career. With his passport still revoked and his sentence looming, it remains uncertain whether he will be able to continue playing basketball professionally.
