The Monbus Obradoiro hunts the first of the season

The miss from the three-point line (5/27, 18 percent shooting), coupled with 13 missed free throws, condemned Casademont Zaragoza to their first defeat of the season at the Monbus Obradoiro court (76-73)who survived his 16 losses – twice as many as his rival – to start the season in the Endesa League with a long-suffering victory.

With an 11-3 start, the Galician team hit their rival as soon as the duel started. Zaragoza’s Austrian coach, Martin Schiller, stopped the game, but his team continued without too many ideas in attack. Obradoiro was more focused on defense. He knew how to close the defensive rebound to drown a Zaragoza that ended the first quarter with a very poor 1/10 in triples.

It is true that Obradoiro’s shooting percentage was not much better from the three-point line (1/7), but he knew how to exploit his inside game to gradually increase his advantage. With Westermann and the Scrubb brothers securely fastened, Croatian Dragan Bender was the offensive solution for Moncho Fernández’s teamwho hit a growth spurt in the last moments of the first quarter (19-8).

Obradoiro maintained that comfortable lead (25-13, min.12) until he was disconnected from the game. He was loaded with fouls very quickly and gave away numerous balls that led to easy baskets for Zaragoza, who grabbed the success of ex-bradoirista Santi Yusta, Ferrari and Sant-Roos to get closer on the scoreboard (33-25).

Moncho Fernández requested time out. He put Leo Westermann back on the track, but it didn’t work either. It was not the night of the French point guard. With a triple from Ferrari, Zaragoza caressed the comeback (38-37). The game was open. The equality was maximum.

Obradoiro’s attitude changed after passing through the locker room. He plugged himself back on defense and played with more joy on offense. His rival, moreover, faded in attack, and Schiller was forced to request another timeout after a 10-2 run in less than two minutes (50-39).

Zaragoza dominated the rebound but his mistake penalized him, against an Obradoiro who survived ahead thanks to his inside game (54-41). It was closed by the visiting team, and doubts appeared again in Moncho Fernández’s players, desperate on the bench for the continuous gifts from his team.

Zaragoza, despite their worrying 3/21 triples and nine missed free throws, came alive in the last quarter after five straight points from Cuban Howard Sant-Roos (60-53). The alarms went off in the Obradoiro, too fast. His rival, despite the fact that he continued wasting free throws, was already three (63-60, min.33).

From there, doubts increased on both sides; and the errors multiplied. The electronic hardly moved. With three minutes remaining, Obradoiro won by three (68-65). Zaragoza’s traffic jam continued, and its coach stopped the game. A triple by Jessup (72-68) made him dream of victory but Sant-Roos missed his layup with 23 seconds remaining.
