The Mexican Congress approves extending the presence of the Army in public security tasks until 2029

The Constitutional Points Commission of the Chamber of Deputies of Mexico has approved this Tuesday the reform that allows the presence of the Army in public security tasks until 2029.

This change will allow that for 10 years from the approval of the law in 2019, the Mexican National Guard, at the request of the President of Mexico, will be able to have military personnel in public security tasks in a "extraordinary, regulated, controlled, subordinated and complementary"as detailed by the Mexican Parliament in a statement.

The document, endorsed with 28 votes in favor and 11 against, is based on the fact that the National Guard, despite its "huge strides"has not managed to fully consolidate its structure, capabilities and territorial implementation, so it is "Clearly more time is needed for this.".

The measure will be carried out with an extension of the fifth transitory article of the Mexican Constitution that will allow the Armed Forces to carry out security tasks until March 27, 2029, as reported by ‘El Universal’.

The Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, proposed in the month of August that soldiers and infantrymen of the Mexican Navy remain in the streets beyond 2024 to support the Mexican Police in public security tasks, after in 2019 they removed forward a reform that had a maximum term of 5 years.

Previously, López Obrador has objected that the "emergency that the country is experiencing in public security" this extension is necessary.

"It is that it was and continues to be necessary (…) It was not normal that they were assaulting a citizen in front of a military barracks and the Army could not constitutionally intervene because they were impeded"López Obrador recalled during a press conference collected by the aforementioned newspaper.
