We speak to the cast of Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender

Piece by piece, Netflix released details about its live-action version of Avatar: The Last Airbender, like the first images and trailers, which of course made our expectations skyrocket. However, We were also very excited to see how they would approach this anime and what both the characters and the settings in which the story takes place would look like..

Taking advantage of the fact that this series finally arrived in the streaming giant’s catalog on February 22nd, We had the opportunity to speak to the protagonists (Gordon Cormier, Ian Ousley and Kiawentiio). who told us their perception of the characters, some of the changes made to adapt the plot to the present and the lessons that this epic adventure leaves behind.

The responsibility of playing a character so beloved by many

Definitely, Aang is a very important character and means a lot to many people around the world., because it was present in a large part of her life. And in Avatar: The Last Airbender, Gordon Cormier does a great job with his interpretation in this new version as he really conveys the mood and values that the character always displayed in the animated series..

But, What does it mean to him as a person and actor to bring Ang to life in this series? How much have you learned about this great character after playing him on the small screen? Well, that’s what the protagonist answered us.

“First things first, thank you for your words. Secondly, I think Aang is a symbol of hope because in this world the Fire Nation takes over and there’s really no sign of hope until he breaks out of the iceberg. And after word spreads throughout the series, people discover the Avatar and the world begins to have hope again. I think that’s a message I’d like to spread.”

There is always an opportunity to improve something in a great story

Often adaptations of something we know serve to improve some things in the original version and bring it into more current thinking. And that’s what happens when Sokka is there Avatar: The Last Airbenderbecause beyond the fact that the essence that the character always had in the animated series is present, They have changed parts of their personality that seem a bit sexist in these times and simply no longer fit the times we find ourselves in..

And in this context Ian Ousley – the actor who plays him in the Netflix live-action – told us the following about this character modificationbut he also told us about the strengths he discovered in Sokka after playing him in this production.

“Yes, I completely understand what you are saying. I think we’re definitely trying to keep exactly the essence of Sokka, and we definitely don’t want to change anything about the character, but you know, we can’t… I agree with what you’re saying. I think in our version of the show you can still feel his sister’s overprotectiveness, and he’s definitely still dealing with that role and feeling humiliated afterward. And in some ways it’s thanks to the part that understands its role in the world.”

“That’s a great question. I think the biggest strength that Sokka has in our version of the series is… from the animated version of the series, he definitely still has that heart and he still has that sense of humor. But in our version, just because we’re dealing with real people, he has a lot more… he has a lot more layers and often he hides his vulnerability with humor. And then I think you can see a lot of deeper layers and understand why Sokka is the way he is, maybe we’ll see some of the things he deals with later in the series and why he tries to hide them with humor . And I think there’s something really introspective and interesting to learn about Sokka that we maybe don’t see as much in the animated series.”

Customize a character and give them some of your personality

Kiawentiio is the actress responsible for bringing Katara to life in 2019 Avatar: The Last Airbender from Netflix. From the animated series, we learned that the last waterbender of her tribe is a loving and compassionate person who, throughout the story, demonstrates her great determination to help others.

However, In the live-action version of this story, we explore certain dimensions that I don’t think were as obvious with this character. But how much of her personality has this actress imprinted on Katara in this version and what does she take away from her? Well, that answered us.

“Yeah, I mean, I feel like Katara and I have a lot in common, and of course that sometimes makes me feel like my own personality comes through. And something that I learned from her, something that I think we could all learn from her too, is how hopeful and optimistic she can be, you know? It’s like the core of who she is. And always being able to look forward and see the positive side of bad situations can be very useful for everyone. And especially, I definitely tried to implement that more into my own life after I got to play her.”
