The largest blockchain and crypto companies

It has been more than 10 years since the blockchain revolution started. Numerous companies and projects have come and gone since then, contributing to what blockchain is today. Many people are now familiar with cryptocurrencies, crypto wallets, crypto apps, mining and exchanges, just to name a few terms. In fact, for many people this is part of their daily lives. Now it is the turn of the financial world to take this step (on a larger scale). Innovative DeFi projects should also lead to a greater role for blockchain and crypto in that sector.

Not every company that has been active in blockchain has lasted, a lot of them have. But what are the largest blockchain companies right now? And which ones grow the fastest? To answer these questions, we looked to data on LinkedIn and from Blockchain4Talent looked. Based on data from LinkedIn, we know how large the organizations are at the moment. The vacancies on Blockchain4Talent show which companies are growing the most. Please note, these data are indicative and do not tell the complete story. The article discusses a top 5 of companies worldwide, in Europe and only in the Netherlands.

Worldwide

Blockchain and crypto are concepts that are increasingly heard all over the world. This is partly due to the companies below, which are currently the largest in their sector. As mentioned, this top 5 looks at the number of employees and the number of open vacancies within the company.

  • square* currently employs 7,786 employees and also 737 open vacancies. The head office is located in the United States.
  • Binance currently employs 3,776 employees and an additional 450 open vacancies. The head office is located in the Cayman Islands.
  • Coinbase currently employs 3121 employees and also 365 open vacancies. The head office is located in the United States.
  • crypto.com currently has 1,759 employees and 331 open vacancies. The head office is located in Hong Kong.
  • BlockFi currently has 813 employees and 20 open vacancies. The head office is located in the United States.

*Square’s business is not 100% blockchain-related. It itself says it gets the majority of their revenue from blockchain and cryptocurrencies. For that reason, Square is included in the list.

Europe

A top 5 has also been made for Europe. These are companies with headquarters in Europe. An American company with many employees in Europe is therefore not included in this list.

  • Blockchain.com currently has 363 employees and 79 open vacancies. The head office is located in Great Britain.
  • Ledger currently has 337 employees and 84 open vacancies. The head office is located in France.
  • latoken currently has 297 employees and 267 open vacancies. The head office is located in Malta.
  • bit stamp currently has 256 employees and 47 open vacancies. The head office is located in Luxembourg.
  • Bitcoin Suisse AG currently has 234 employees and an additional 26 open vacancies. The head office is located in Switzerland.

It is immediately apparent in the European list that there is no company that also belongs in the world top. Blockchain.com is the largest in Europe and is ranked 16th worldwide.

The Netherlands

Finally, we will discuss the top 5 blockchain companies in the Netherlands.

  • Bitfury currently has 94 employees and 82 open vacancies.
  • LiteBit currently has 58 employees and 1 open vacancy.
  • BTC Direct currently has 53 employees and 15 open vacancies.
  • bitvavo currently employs 53 employees and also has 21 open vacancies.
  • Anycoin Direct currently has 41 employees and 1 open vacancy.

Bitfury is the largest blockchain company headquartered in the Netherlands and it is nowhere near the list of top European companies. It is very likely that the political climate in the Netherlands has had a negative impact on this.

Conclusion

Based on the data discussed in this article, we can conclude that Europe (and the Netherlands at all) does not yet play a major role on a global level. The largest blockchain companies are located elsewhere in the world. Companies from the United States in particular are doing well. Blockchain.com, the largest European company, is only 16th in the global list. For now, these are the numbers. Time will tell whether the Netherlands and the rest of Europe can find the connection in the field of blockchain and crypto.
