The Knicks keep dreaming: goodbye to some horrible Cavs

Follow the dream of the Knicks. The New York team has passed over the Cavaliers in a series that promised a lot and has come to nothing. Tom Thibodeau has taken over the tie and has given a tactical review to JB Bickerstaff with the basketball that he likes the most and that Madison has always wanted: punch, defense, rebound. What Pat Riley did in the ’90s to brush up against the ring and then stretch out a tight-fisted copycat like Jeff Van Gundy in the worst version of the style is what the Knicks are doing long after their glory years. And, of course, decades after those distant rings (1970 and 1973) that are part of the prehistory of North American competition. They haven’t been competitive for 20 years. What’s more, they advance to the semifinals for the second time in a decade (2013, with Carmelo Anthony at the controls). But there they are: and deservedly so.

The victory of the Knicks is the defeat of the Cavaliers, a team from which much more was expected this season and, of course, in this series. The indisputable 4-1 leaves many questions for those from Ohio, who faced this basketball season with the project tied up and now they know that it is not. Now here near. Donovan Mitchell’s fit next to Darius Garland and how little involved the rest of the teammates are is worrying. Also the management of Bickerstaff, who can be an impulse coach, one of those who makes a team competitive but then is forced to leave and make way for someone with more answers when push comes to shove. The small forward position remains unfilled, the depth of the roster is thin and the physical preparation has been questionable: they have ended badly normal seasonit has become long and tedious, they have not reached the playoffs well and they have lost in hand-to-hand a battle in which they should have stood up much more.

It was the feeling: that the Knicks wanted to sentence and the Cavs wanted to finish. And the game was for the New Yorkers from the beginning and without palliatives: 26-33 at the end of the third quarter, 51-61 at halftime. And without Julius Randle, who was injured with only 16 minutes played (13+4+6). Bad news for Tom Thibodeau facing the semifinals, which will be against Heat or Bucks. But that’s another story, since the Knicks can be proud of their season and what happens from here is a gift. Against the Cavs, they dedicated themselves to managing differences, always around 10 points, they managed to win 18 and never went behind on the scoreboard. The locals tried to show some self-respect at the end and got to 10 (90-100 with just over 2 minutes to go).. But she stayed in mere makeup. The final result was 95-106. And the feeling that the victory was much larger.

The Knicks overwhelmed their rivals, as in the entire series, from the rebound: 35-62, an abysmal difference based on Mitchell Robinson (18, 11 of them offensive, to whom he added 13 points) and Josh Hart (12, with 4 goals), that player very much in the Thibodeau style and who has become a fetish for the coach. Between the two 30s, only 5 less than all the Cavs combined. Jalen Brunson had a bad shooting day (8 of 22), but he went to 23 points, with 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Rj Barrett made 21+4+4. Immanuel Quickley, 19 off the bench. And from the same place, Obi Toppin added 12. Things are clear and let’s see what happens with Randle’s situation to face the semifinals and give war to whoever may come. And many smiles after a season that began in a very difficult way for the Knicks, with rumors even of the end of Thibodeau’s time on the bench.. But that it has been fixed and has gone in an objectively upward dynamic: without any doubt.

The Cavs are forced to go to the thinking corner. Mitchell dedicated himself to shooting a lot (11 of 26 on the shot, with 3 of 12 on 3-pointers), often in a hasty manner, despite finishing with 28 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. And Garland stayed at 21, but lost 6 balls. Caris LeVert scored 19 goals and Isaac Okoro 10 off the bench, but nothing worked for a team that was always in tow and never gave the feeling of being able to come back. The season is over for them and also for Ricky Rubio, who did not play again and has not returned to being the point guard he was before his unfortunate injury, one that is too hard for someone already 32 years old and already 11 seasons in the NBA who they wear anyone out. He has a contract until 2025 and will continue to be linked, in principle, to the entity. And he moves between two aspects: that his best moment has passed or that he needs more time to return to his best level. We will see. For the moment and except for surprise, his next stop will be the World Cup with Spain. The Cavs will have to make decisions. And the Knicks, their executioners, keep dreaming. It is not for less.
