The King of Spain, Felipe VI, met this Wednesday with the outgoing president of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernández, and the new president, Xiomara Castro, in two parallel events.
"It is a pleasure to receive His Majesty the King of Spain Felipe VI, a great friend from Honduras who supported us throughout my administration."Hernández wrote on his Twitter account, after finishing the brief meeting at the Presidential House (headquarters), located in Tegucigalpa.
Later, King Felipe VI met in a hotel next to the presidential headquarters, for about an hour, with Castro.
"An honor to meet and talk with His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain, about cooperation and strengthening the relationship between our countries. We are already identifying opportunities for all Hondurans"Castro said on his Twitter.
King Felipe VI arrived in Honduras on Wednesday to attend the inauguration of the new president, leader of the Libertad y Refundación Party (Libre, left) and elected with a resounding majority in the elections on November 28.
Accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of Spain, José Manuel Albares, the monarch was received by the Honduran Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Lisandro Rosales, members of President Castro’s Transition Commission and staff from the Embassy of Spain , led by Ambassador Guillermo Kirkpatrick.
Your agenda for today will close with a meeting with a representative of the Spanish community in Honduras.
Castro, the first woman in the history of Honduras to reach the Presidency, will take office tomorrow, at the National Stadium in Tegucigalpa, for a four-year term, with great challenges such as the high rate of poverty -around 70% of the population- and corruption, which has come to splash Hernández.
