Islamabad: Pakistan Interservice Intelligence (ISI) The Director General (DG), Lieutenant General Nadeem Anjum, has asked all concerned officials not to release their photographs or video footage to the media during any official meeting. This information has been provided in The News International report. For this reason, the government did not release photos or videos of him, a federal minister said.
The News International reported that the National Security Committee meeting in which DG ISI participated took place on Monday. However, photo and video images released by the government to the media show almost everyone except the country’s top spymaster. When asked why, the minister said that it was a permanent instruction from DG ISI in office for all concerned not to disclose any of his photographs or video footage at any official meeting he attends.
The minister said that no photographs or video of him have been released to the media since his appointment as Director General of the ISI. Commenting on this, Lt. Gen. (Retd) Amjad Shoaib said that the basic principle of intelligence services is to stay out of the eyes of the media. He said this principle has been violated in the past and that governments have been publishing photographs and videos of intelligence chiefs to the media on occasion, The News International reported.
Shoaib said intelligence chiefs should not appear in the media or on television screens, according to the report. Generally, he explained that spies are not recognized in public around the world for the same reasons. He said that this basic principle was compromised during the Afghanistan war when General Hameed Gul and General Javed Nasir were leading the ISI. He said he was not part of any intelligence network, but even when he was promoted and posted as GOC Quetta, then-Army Chief General Abdul Waheed Kakar had advised him to stay away from the media.
Major General (Retd) Ejaz Awan, who had previously also served at ISI, told The News that the new ISI DG is following the pattern of doing his job without being publicized in the media. Awan recalled that when he was appointed Commander of the ISI Sector in Lahore, his DG ISI General (Retd) Ahsan told him that “if you wander through Lahore and nobody notices you and nobody recognizes you here, then you will be a good intelligence operator” .
