The high mountains arrive at the Tour: Is there a chance for Colombians?

The time for action in the 2023 Tour de France is approaching. After the start in Spanish territory and two sprint definitions upon entering France that did not imply major changes to the general classification, The high mountain arrives at the 110th edition of the competition.

Colombia continues with five representatives in the race and there is no doubt that the terrain in which they feel most comfortable and have made a difference throughout their careers is in the mountains, for this reason it is an opportunity for them to shine and seek victory number 23 for our country.

Soudet and Tourmalet, ports out of category on consecutive days

Stage 5

This Wednesday, July 5, the fifth stage of the Tour will take place, which will be 162.7 kilometers from Pau to Laruns. There will be no high arrival, but there will be a mountain requirement, starting with Col de Soudet, a 15.2 km special category climb at 7.2% average inclination and with ramps greater than 12%. To this is added Ichere and Marie Blanque, third and first category promotions, respectively, the latter located just under 20 km from the finish line.

Soudet brings back positive memories for Tadej Pogacar and Egan Bernal, Well, the last time the Tour passed through this port was in 2020 with victory for the Slovenian and fourth place for the Colombian without losing time, who was second overall behind Primoz Roglic. Rigoberto Urán closed the top 10 of that ninth stage at 11 seconds.

Stage 6

On Thursday the requirement will continue in the Pyrenees with 144.9 kilometers between Tarbes and Cauterets-Cambasque. A third class port, two first class (one at the finish line) and in the middle of them the famous Tourmalet, a 17.1 km special category pass with an average slope of 7.3%. The arrival at Cauterets-Cambasque will have ramps greater than 10% inclination.

The last time the Tourmalet closed a stage of the Tour was in 2019 with the victory of Thiabut Pinot and two Colombians in the top 10: Egan fifth and Rigo seventh. However, this time it is in the middle of the journey, as happened two years ago, when Pogacar won and the best of ours was Sergio Higuita in seventh place.

Is there a chance for Colombians?

Egan Bernal and Harold Tejada are 43” and 1’41” behind Adam Yates, respectively, so the favorites will be attentive to their movements and possible attacks in the mountains, in which it will be quite difficult to beat Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard, who have already demonstrated their good condition in a short but demanding ascent in the Basque Country. On that side, a possible victory looks complex, but the other three options for our country appear.

Esteban Chaves, Daniel Felipe Martínez and Rigoberto Urán are far away in the general classification, so they could be part of a leak to try their luck as long as their teams allow it. They will work for their leaders on the climbs, but an attack from them will not disturb the favorites and they could look for a victory for Colombia after three years, since the last time was in 2020: Martínez won stage 13 and Superman López, 17.
