The great novel of La Vuelta

The Grand Tours are long-distance races, almost survival. Originally, a century ago, even an adventure. They do not have much relation with the classics, the other support of cycling, although the actors are coincident in some cases. In a classic you can take the rest throughout the tour, you do not have to save anything. In a large one, you must always walk with one eye on the present and another on the future. The classic is like a good report: you eat it in the moment. The Back to Spain, the Tour de France or the Italy spin they are a voluminous novel, which is consumed chapter by chapter, some more exciting and others more boring. It is savored page by page, but what counts is the outcome. The favorites look to the crowning of the last day, which in the end is the sum of each day, each pedal stroke … The fan would like each stage to offer a sublime show, as happens in the classics, but from the point of view of the aspirant, it is not always the smartest way to achieve the ultimate goal. Each one adapts the story to their own interests.

The Return 2021 has been narrated with disappointing episodes, such as the stage of Villuercas, which only honored its winner, Romain Bardet. And with other more beautiful ones, like the unsuspected proposal of Primoz Roglic on Almáchar. The race, despite everything, emanates the feeling that it still has the best, that the most epic paragraphs are yet to be written. That is surely what its protagonists think with another book, the road book, in front of their eyes: the Lakes of Covadonga, this Wednesday; the expected Gamoniteiro, this Thursday; the trap prepared by Oscar Pereiro in your locality of Mos, Saturday; and the chrono of Santiago de Compostela, on Sunday. There is still ground to prop up this great novel with a glorious ending. It is the cyclists who write their chapters. Nobody else. It depends on them.
