I have heard many times that Europe, in the current globalized economic context, weighs down on itself through regulation and more regulation. And it is true, by Tutatis. We are, Brussels, the champions of legislation, self-regulation…”normative to normative”, what would the ‘Cholo’ Simeone say. It is not that I am against the legislative power, rather I am against the number of fools that inhabit our planet per square meter; and consequently, in favor of establishing limits. So much so that, half jokingly, half seriously, I always say that the next great European unicorn will be a legal-tech one. Yes or yes.
In the midst of all this, and without realizing it, reality leads us to the gates of a new corporate model that could change the current global economic situation. And at this point, Europe wants to position itself as the great world power, this time, supported by the legislative power. Indeed, I am talking about sustainability, green economy, circular economy… give it whatever last name you want.
I explain. As many are unaware, on January 1, 2024 the CSDR (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive) will come into force, which basically establishes a methodology for all companies operating in Europe “Disclose and make public information on sustainability issues that affect the company.” The goal: to lay the foundations for reach new business models where sustainability is financially sustainable for companies, with the horizon set in the Paris Agreement to reduce global warming in pursuit of a better world in which to leave something more than abrasive garbage to our great-offspring. Don’t be scared either: the regulations come into force first for large companies – which have been doing this for a long time -, and progressively for smaller ones, until in 2028, (God willing) this is mandatory for EVERYONE.
I have recently been able to talk (rather listen and learn) at length with a CSO (Chief Sustainability Officer) of a well-known Spanish fashion company, who has made me see the subject in its absolute depth. And this is not about (only) planting trees. You are dreaming of a company with zero impact on the environment. As if it did not exist, it levitated.
They imagine? No, I’m already telling you that it’s impossible, obviously, but at least trying to achieve it is and will be vital, not only for the future of our planet, but also for the very future of companies, which will be judged not by the weight of the legislative power, but by the unequivocal judgment of a society that is increasingly sensitive to the issue. Well, that’s what we say in the surveys, then the reality is different, especially on vacation, where we all become especially stupid. How was that phrase from the always great Oscar Wilde…? “Give a man a mask and he will tell you the truth.”
That trial you mentioned makes me think about the Maat’s feather, the God of ancient Egypt who placed in the Judgment of Osiris on one side of the balance the Feather of Truth and in another the Ib (the heart of the deceased) that represented the conscience and morality of the deceased. And you know that the Feather had to weigh more than the heart if you didn’t want to end up in Ammyt’s jaws.
Just as I am writing this editorial, I receive an SMS from my bank: “Publi BBVA: Up to €21,000 for you, don’t leave it. And if your project is SUSTAINABLE (yes, yes, in capital letters) improve conditions. Call XXXXXXXX toll-free”. They see him? This has already started, please do your green homework.
