"The end of the pandemic is near"the prediction of the WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) revealed that the number of cases of covid-19 It is currently the lowest since when coronavirus cases reached their first peak in 2020 and he predicted that, if this trend continues, “the end of the pandemic is near”.

Since it was unleashed at the end of 2019, the world “has never been in a better position to end the pandemic” of covid-19, for which 6.5 million people have died so far, said the director general of that organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

“We are not there yet, but the end of the pandemic is in sight”stressed at his weekly press conference in Geneva, Switzerland, during which he stressed the importance of not stopping vaccination campaigns or the care or efforts of governments to end the virus that paralyzed social and productive activity for much of of the countries it devastated.

Last week “the number of weekly deaths from Covid-19 fell to its lowest level since March 2020. We have never been in a better position to end the pandemic. It’s not over yet, but its end is at hand,” he said.

For this reason, he added, to stop now “is to risk further variants of the coronavirus, more deaths, more problems and greater uncertainty”, he remarked and maintained that covid-19 is “in the final stretch” of its presence.

In this regard, he made a comparison: “A marathon runner does not stop when he begins to see the finish line, but advances until he reaches it,” he said to support prevention and care campaigns.

To help make this stretch of history the “final stretch” of the virus, Tedros launched an advisory plan for national health policies “Based on evidence from the past 32 months on what works best to save lives, protect health networks, and prevent disruptions to the economy and society.”

Among the recommendations he mentioned were investment in vaccination especially in risk groupsthe continuity of coronavirus tests in the laboratory to control possible new variants and improvements in health systems.
