The DR is already in the world elite of the countries with the highest proportion of certified airports

With the inclusion of the international airports Casa de Campo, in La Romana, and Gregorio Luperón, in Puerto Plata, the Dominican Republic is among the countries with the highest proportion of certified airports in the world according to the standards recommended by the Organization of the International Civil Aviation (ICAO).

Offering the information, the deputy director general of the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation (IDAC), Hector Porcella, explained that with the progress of this process, the country guarantees compliance with the continuous and uniform operational safety requirements for all aircraft that use international terminals operating in Dominican territory.

“To complete the total certification of the country’s international airports, only the María Montés de Barahona Airport is pending, which is in its final certification phase,” said Porcella, after delivering, on behalf of the IDAC general director, Román E. Caamaño, of the certificates corresponding to the airport operators of La Romana and Puerto Plata.

The certification of the two airport terminals was received by Luis Rodríguez Amiama, general manager, and Milcíades Castillo, director of Operations of the Casa de Campo Airport; and by Mónika Infante, CEO of Dominican Airports (AERODOM); and Carlos Rodoli, director of the Gregorio Luperón Airport.

Benefits of certification

Héctor Porcella referred to the benefits that the certification of airport terminals brings to the country, highlighting in the foreground, the increase in the levels of safety and efficiency of its operations, according to the demanding standards outlined by the ICAO; but he also cited the strengthening of the country’s competitiveness as the first tourist destination in the Caribbean, the increase in the reliability of the various air operators, and the reduction in the costs of the operators’ policies.

“With the Certification of the International Airports of La Romana, Casa de Campo and Gregorio Luperón of Puerto Plata, the Dominican state is among the countries with the most certified airports worldwide and in the region, positioning us among those with the highest compliance at the international level. international”, emphasized Porcella.

And he added that the certification process of these airports was affected by the COVID 19 pandemic, noting that thanks to the management of the new IDAC authorities, the process was restarted, culminating in the certificate delivery event.

He said that the management carried out by the IDAC corresponds not only to the ICAO mandates, but also to the due compliance with article 174 of the Civil Aviation Law 491-06, with the regulations of the Dominican Aeronautical Regulation (RAD) in its numerals 14 and 19, and with the agreements of the summit held in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago in 2014.
