Nuria Sánchez’s Dorsia Covirán, with José Manuel Ruiz as skipper, finally finished at the top of the standings in the Spanish-Lurauto J80 Championship after the dispute this Sunday of the third and last day in the Biscayan waters of the Abra. The privileged position that everyone was chasing was achieved by the boat from the Real Club de Regatas de Alicante, with 22 points, compared to 24 by José Azqueta’s Biobizz from Biscay, runner-up, and 25 by Fredo La Estrella del Norte from Pichu Torcida, who completed the podium of a very exciting championship throughout the eight events held in the Abra exterior.
On the decisive day of this competition, organized by the Real Club Marítimo del Abra-Real Sporting Club in the year of its 125th anniversary, the twenty-seven participating crews made two routes with northwesterly winds of 8 to 10 knots, somewhat lower than in the two preceding days. The victory for the mixed crew also fell to Nuria Sánchez’s Dorsia Covirán; the best female crew was the Gipuzkoan from Olatz Muñoz’s Decoexsa; and the best junior was the Vizcaya from the HibLab Escuela de Vela José Luis de Ugarte de Tomás Trueba.
The first of the tests of the third day was won by Ignacio Camino’s Solintal, with the second place for the Galician Okofen of Javier de la Gándara and the third for Fredo La Estrella del Norte of Pichu Torcida. It was the eighth round, shortened because the wind was falling, which determined who was going to take the absolute victory. And this was that of Dorsia Covirán, who scored this round ahead of Ignacio Camino’s Solintal, the best on the last day, and José Azqueta’s Biobizz, who had a formidable championship in which he penalized the off-line in the fourth tour when he was clearly leading this Championship of Spain-Lurauto.
Equality and suspense have been predominant in this Spanish-Lurauto J80 Championship, a regatta with a very high level of participation among its twenty-seven crews. After the podium reached by Dorsia Covirán, Biobizz and Fredo La Estrella del Norte, the top ten was completed by David Madrazo’s Zona Franca Santander, Manuel de Tomás’ Iser from Valencia, Rafael Malo’s Etnia Barcelona and Peru Múgica , the Solintal by Ignacio Camino, the Decoexsa by Olatz Muñoz, the Okofen by Javier de la Gándara and the Enbata80 by Íñigo Jauregui.
This test has been organized by the Real Club Marítimo del Abra-Real Sporting Club by delegation of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation, with the sponsorship of BMW LURAUTO and the collaboration of El Correo, Royal Spanish Sailing Federation, Basque and Vizcaya Federation of Vela, the Spanish J80 Owners Association; and which has had the support of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia and the Getxo City Council.
The RCMA-RSC’s commitment to the J80 modality has been reinforced with the women’s, mixed and youth classification. The Las Arenas club also organizes an international women’s event in this class, which recently completed its fourth edition. In addition, another of the highlights in the history of the RCMA-RSC, immersed in its 125th Anniversary, was the great World Championship of this class organized in 2019 with a record participation and to which the sailors who attended gave a very high grade.
The latter has been a beautiful weekend in the Abra since within the program of this Championship of Spain-Lurauto se held a solidarity concert in favor of the DalecandELA association, with live music from 6:00 p.m. with versions from the 60s, 70s and 80s (Funk Sinatra and The Sons of Lee Marvin), as well as DJs, children’s activities, food trucks and a good atmosphere in this charity initiative.
The RCMA-RSC, with 125 years of history since the founding of Sporting in 1898, thus reinforces a fruitful career in the organization of regattas with a very complete annual calendar and a consolidated fleet, both Cruisers, J80s and light sails. .
