West Ham United defender Ben Johnson has emerged as an interesting target for Real Betis and Villarreal. The 23-year-old, who has played a supporting role in David Moyes' side this season, has caught the attention of both La Liga clubs and Sheffield United.
Despite his limited appearances in the Premier League this season, Johnson has been a key figure for the Hammers since making his debut in February 2019. His 93 appearances and contribution in the Europa Conference League last season made him a sought-after player.
Ben Johnson, option for Betis and Villarreal
With his contract at West Ham expiring at the end of the 2023/24 season, Johnson will be able to discuss previous deals with foreign clubs, with Real Betis and Villarreal having bid for his services in the competition. Manuel Pellegrini, current Betis coach and Johnson's former coach at West Ham, is seeking a reunion with the right-back at the Benito Villamarín Stadium.
Villarreal, for its part, is increasing its efforts to secure Johnson's signature and is looking to strengthen its defense following the arrival of Héctor Bellerín. However, interest is not limited to Spain: Sheffield United, Leeds United and Southampton also want to sign the player before the transfer window closes in January.
With Sheffield United struggling at the bottom of the Premier League table and looking for defensive solutions, the signing of Johnson could be crucial. Leeds United are also looking to strengthen their right-back after losing Djed Spence and Luke Ayling.
Johnson, meanwhile, could have a rare opportunity to shine in the FA Cup when West Ham face Bristol City in the third round replay. Competition between clubs for the young defender is expected to remain intense until the end of the transfer window.
