The death toll from consuming adulterated cider in Russia rises to 29

The number of victims poisoned by ingesting adulterated cider in Russia increased to 29 dead and 61 wounded, authorities said on Tuesday.

On Monday, the Russian authorities had reported a balance of at least 16 deaths and several dozen injured.

“The total number of victims of surrogate alcohol poisoning in the Russian regions amounts to 90 people”, of which 29 died, indicated the Ministry of Health, quoted by Russian press agencies.

According to the source, four people are in “extremely serious condition” and 30, in “serious condition”.

According to Russian media, the victims consumed an alcohol called “Mister Cider” containing methanol, a highly toxic product. This drink was sold in some alcohol outlets.

The Russian authorities opened an investigation and ordered the confiscation of the bottles of contaminated alcohol.

Deaths from adulterated alcohol are common in Russia, where the prices of liquor sold in large stores are prohibitively expensive for millions of impoverished Russians, especially in rural areas where living standards are very low.

In October 2021, 35 people died of alcohol poisoning in two different incidents in Russia.
