The cycling festival returns to Colmenar Viejo

More than 1,000 participants have started this morning from the Martín Colmenarejo Sports Center in Colmenar Viejo, to enjoy a day of sports and fun on the occasion of the 10th edition of the great festival of cycling tourism in Madrid. After two years of absence due to the adverse circumstances caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the platoon of the Desafío Puertos de Guadarrama by TotalEnergies has once again set course for the Sierra de Guadarrama to cover 159 km (Gran Fondo) and 73 km ( Middle Bottom). The Cerro de San Pedro, La Trampa, the Puerto de Canencia and the timed ascent of La Morcuera have been the great challenges of the day.

The Sierra de Guadarrama has once again been the main stage of the test. An environment that many fans associate with great cycling feats, such as that stage of La Vuelta 15 with which the Italian Fabio Arau managed to turn the general classification upside down on matchday 20 to beat the Dutchman Tom Dumoulin. In 2022, the mountains will once again be an exceptional witness in stage 20 of La Vuelta, between Moralzarzal and the Port of Navacerradawhich will decide the final winner.

Guadalix de la Sierra, La Cabrera, Valdemanco, Cabanillas de la Sierra, Navalafuente, Miraflores de la Sierra, Rascafría, Alameda del Valle, Lozoya and Canencia have been some of the towns through which the test has passed. A day that started somewhat cloudy and during which the participants suffered inclement weather in some ports, making the race tougher and causing the cyclists to take extreme precautions, especially on the descents.

The Martin Colmenarejo Sports Center has been the epicenter of the previous and subsequent animations, with the presence of stands of prestigious brands such as Santini, TotalEnergies, Maglia Sport, Black Pepper or Alé. Once the tour is over, the reward has come from the hand of Burgos Alimenta, which has starred in its particular challenge: prepare Burgos black pudding and fried eggs for all the participants. A good dish to recover the energy spent on each climb.

The test once again welcomed participants of all ages and the organization rewarded the youngest and most veteran in both men and women. In boys, 18 and 74 years were the most “extreme” ages, while in the female platoon they ranged between 24 and 57 years. The club with the most participants, Canal de Isabel II (18), was also awarded.

On June 4, the next Challenge by TotalEnergies will be held in another iconic setting of cycling sport: the Lakes of Covadonga. Registration is still open until May 30.
