S Jaishankar on US Media: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has slammed several prominent American media houses, including The Washington Post, for giving “biased” reports regarding India. In an interaction with Indian-Americans, Jaishankar said on Sunday, “I look at the news coming in the media. There are some newspapers about which you know very well what they are going to write and one such newspaper is here too. The Washington Post is a national daily newspaper published in Washington DC and is owned by Jeff Bezos of Amazon.

Jaishankar said in response to a question related to the strength of anti-India forces, ‘My point is that some people are prejudiced, they try to decide the decisions… and as soon as India starts taking its own decisions. Such people who see themselves in the role of mentor, their thoughts will come out. He said that such groups are ‘not winning in India’. The minister said that such groups try to win outside the country and try to form the opinion and perceptions of India from outside.

Need to be cautious- Jaishankar

He said, ‘We need to be cautious about this. It is important to challenge. It’s not because most Americans wouldn’t know the nuances and complexities of a home, therefore, it’s important not to sit still, not to let others define me. This is something that I think is very important for us as a community.’ On the question of misrepresentation of the Kashmir issue in the US capital, he said if a terrorist incident happens, it does not matter which religion the person is killed.

people supported with applause

“Whether Indian soldiers or Indian police personnel are kidnapped, whether government employees or civilians going to their work are killed? When have you heard people talking about this, criticizing it… rather look at the media reports. What is shown in the media and what is not shown?’ The External Affairs Minister said to the thunderous applause of the people present at the event that this is how opinions and perceptions actually take shape.

Foreign Minister also said about the Internet

He said, ‘There is a big noise being made about internet shutdown. Now, if you have reached a level where you say shutting down the internet is more dangerous than the loss of human life, what can I say?’
