The Chinese government claims to have an AI that reads minds

The Artificial Intelligence Institute of the Hefei National Center for Comprehensive Sciences created an AI program that supposedly can analyze brain waves and facial expressions to determine if a person is loyal to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

Interestingly, the original statement and the accompanying investigation were withdrawn shortly after publication.

China is no stranger to strict enforcement of CCP ideologies and is also known for its rigorous surveillance programs, but the quick removal of the latest polls suggests it could be a scare tactic.

In the now-deleted video, a person can be seen watching content about the ruling party on a screen while the AI program collects data on brain signals, facial movements and the electrical response of the skin.

At the end of the observation, the program returned a score based on metrics such as “emotional identification” and “attention to learning” that they would dictate whether the test subject needed a better education or passed the loyalty threshold.

The search produces terms such as measurement of “level of acceptance of the individual party member’s ideological and political education”the quantification of “thought education” and the creation of “new paths for party building”.

Regarding the objective of creating the AI program, the investigation indicates that it intends to “encourage our members to feel more gratitude for the party, listen to the party and solidify their determination to follow the party.”

China’s latest AI innovation raises questions. It is unclear whether facial expressions are sufficient to study a particular emotion called loyalty simply based on the assessment of a person’s face while viewing a party’s propaganda material.
