“The Bengal Files” has been creating quite a stir, and not just because of its story. The film officially hit theaters across the country on September 5, 2025. But its journey took an unexpected turn in Kolkata, where its release faced some unusual challenges.
Now, a new development has unfolded. “The Bengal Files” is finally set for its first screening in Kolkata. This special event will take place on September 13, 2025. The historic Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Bhasha Bhawan will host the premiere.
Claims of an Unofficial Ban
Director Vivek Agnihotri and producer Pallavi Joshi made some serious claims. They stated that the film was unofficially banned in Kolkata. This meant it wasn’t shown in local cinemas, even though it was playing everywhere else. This upcoming screening is a significant step, marking the film’s official entry into West Bengal. Former Rajya Sabha MP Swapan Dasgupta also confirmed the Kolkata showing.
Why the Hold-up?
So, why the delay in the first place? Reports suggest that local movie theaters had concerns. They decided not to show the film due to worries about potential political unrest. While the wider public couldn’t see it, some private screenings were held in select locations. This special event on September 13 will be a closed-door affair, intended for a select group of guests only.

Director Vivek Agnihotri Speaks Out
Vivek Agnihotri has not been shy about his frustration regarding the film’s non-release. He strongly believes that the ban in West Bengal actually validates the very points his film tries to make. He publicly stated, “The ban on our film in West Bengal proves what we have shown in our film. If the film has not been allowed to be released there, it must have been done to make someone happy. It is sad that such unconstitutional work is happening in India. This is sad for artists.”
