The Basque Country will spend 12 million to host the great start of the Tour in 2023

The Basque Country will spend 12 million to host the great start of the Tour in 2023. It will be an agreement between seven institutions because there will be no private investment in one of the most ambitious projects for Euskadi in the coming years. It is expected that by then, the pandemic will have been overcome and the Great Exit can be made at full capacity. The institutions involved are the city councils of Bilbao, San Sebastián and Vitoria; the Provincial Councils of Vizcaya, Guipúzcoa and Álava and, logically, the Basque Government itself.

All of them will invest 12 million euros. Town halls and provincial entities will contribute approximately 760,000 euros each. With this, more than 3 million euros will be added because taxes must be added to the total amount, which, in the case of the Basque Country, are formalized in the Provincial Councils themselves. The rest, 75% of the total amount, will be covered by the Basque Government. That is, about 9 million euros within a strategic plan to boost the economy after the coronavirus.

Close to 6 million will go to ASO as a canon and the rest for the enormous expenses that they will have to face for an event of such magnitude. The first stage will leave Bilbao on July 1, 2023 and then there will be two more through Basque territory with the commitment to touch all the provinces and capitals. Either as exits or as places of transit within the layout of the stage.

The first contacts were made a few years ago and, at last, it has come together definitively. The highest representatives of the French organization have already visited the Biscayan capital on several occasions and have met with representatives of the Basque Government. The executive assures that the investment will revert directly and indirectly in the economy of the three historical territories. The Tour is seen in 190 different countries.
