The Zurich Marathon of Barcelona will be held on May 8, 2022, while the eDreams Half Marathon of the city, which was to be held on March 6, will take place on April 3, date on which the 42,195-kilometer race was originally to be held.
As reported by the Barcelona City Council in a statement, the “most appropriate” dates have been sought based on “the health crisis” caused by covid-19, the “state and international athletic calendar” and “weather”.
Both tests, according to the consistory, They will be held on those dates “as long as sanitary conditions allow it”.
The celebration of the Barcelona marathon was scheduled for April 3, the same day that the Zaragoza marathon will be held.
A date that clashed with the regulations of road competitions of the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation (RFEA) that specifies that “unless agreed between the affected organizers, the national calendar will not authorize the celebration of two or more marathons on the same weekend or holiday throughout the national territory.”
In this sense, the Barcelona City Council points out in the statement that “the delay by the career management company in submitting the date reservation to the RFEA it has been a coincidence with the Spanish Championship “which will take place in Zaragoza.
To the coincidence of the Zurich Marathon of Barcelona with the Aragonese test, it is added, according to the statement, the health situation due to the increase in positives for coronavirus.
“The international nature of the event, with more than 50% foreign participation, requires finding moments that reduce uncertainty and favor the mobility of athletes”, defends the Barcelona City Council, which adds that “spring is the best option for both races to be held”.
This decision was made after the sports councilor of the Barcelona City Council, David Escudé, advanced last Sunday that a possible change in the marathon calendar was being studied.
