The balance of the attack against a Mexican prison rises to 19 dead and 25 escaped inmates

The attack carried out on Sunday against a prison in Mexico’s Ciudad Juárez (north) left 19 dead and 25 escaped prisoners, according to a balance updated by the government on Monday.

A previous report reported of the death of ten prison guards and four inmates, as well as 24 escaped inmates after the assault attributed to a gang of drug traffickers.

But the Secretary of Defense, Luis Cresencio Sandoval, confirmed this Monday at a press conference that ten guards, seven prisoners and two attackers died in the events.

Among the escapees is the leader of a gang allied with the Juárez cartel in its war against the Sinaloa cartel, formerlyor led by Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmansentenced to life in prison in the United States.

The assault occurred at dawn on Sunday. when relatives of inmates were lined up for the New Year’s visit, and the squad, which arrived in armored vehicles, opened fire on the guards.

This Monday, the forces of order continued to be deployed in search of the escapees and the other members of the armed command.

Ciudad Juárez, on the border with El Paso in the United States, is strategic in drug trafficking and one of the points where the wave of violence linked to drug trafficking erupted in 2006.

With a capacity for 3,135 inmates but currently occupied by 3,901, the attacked prison has been the scene of several fights and riots, including one that left 20 dead in March 2009.

Detention centers in Mexico, mainly state ones, suffer from chronic problems of overcrowding and violence, which have worsened in recent years due to conflicts between criminal groups.
