Thailand Unveils AI Regulatory Framework to Ensure Responsible Use

The Thai government is taking a big step towards becoming a leader in AI governance. Recently, they opened a forum to gather opinions on the country’s first AI law. The goal is to create rules for using AI that balance innovation with social protection.

Professor Wisit Wisitsora-at, Deputy Minister of Digital Economy and Society, says AI is a powerful tool that can boost the economy and improve people’s lives. But, he notes, we need to think carefully about how to use it without blocking innovation or harming people’s rights.

Thailand will host a global forum on AI ethics in June, which will be a key step in defining the future of AI development. To prepare for this, the country needs to develop its people, infrastructure, and regulations.

Right now, Thailand doesn’t have any concrete laws governing AI. What exists are just guidelines, which might not be enough in a rapidly changing world. That’s why a clear legal framework is necessary.

The proposed law will cover several key areas, including:

  • Promoting innovation, such as testing in a Regulatory Sandbox
  • Regulating high-risk AI
  • Establishing liability for AI mistakes
  • Defining the roles of regulatory agencies
  • Setting up an organization to oversee AI laws

Dr. Sak Segkuntod, Senior Advisor to the ETDA, emphasizes that this law is not just about legal tools, but about finding a balance between using technology for social good and protecting people’s rights and safety.

People can share their opinions on the proposed law until June 9th at http://bit.ly/4kBjBTU.
