Texas Flash Flood Kills 68; Missing Children Sought from Camp Mystic

The grim tally from sudden floods in Texas has tragically climbed to at least 68 lives lost. Meanwhile, desperate rescue teams are racing against the clock, searching for children who vanished from a summer camp after being swept away by raging waters.

On Sunday, July 6, 2025, authorities in Texas continued their frantic hunt for dozens of individuals still missing across several flood-hit areas in the central part of the state. This included young campers, swept from safety as floodwaters surged. The rising death toll underscores the disaster’s severe impact.

The flash floods first struck early last Friday. They happened about 65 miles northwest of San Antonio. Heavy rains caused the Guadalupe River to burst its banks, sending a wall of water through communities.

One place hit hard was Camp Mystic, a summer camp for girls located close to the Guadalupe River. In a terrifying turn of events, the river’s level shot up by eight meters in just 45 minutes during the early hours of Friday morning. This sudden rise swept away a number of the children staying at the camp.

Officials in Texas initially reported 27 children missing from Camp Mystic on Saturday. However, by Sunday, they reduced that number to 11 children and one adult counselor. They did not explain why the number of missing had changed. The mystery behind this change adds to the heartbreak of the situation.

Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick delivered more somber news, warning that additional flooding could occur. The National Weather Service backed this warning, cautioning that slow-moving thunderstorms might cause further flash floods across central Texas. Governor Greg Abbott promised that the search efforts would not stop until every missing child is found.

In a heartening show of community spirit, many Texans from unaffected areas traveled to Kerr County. They offered to help officials in the search. Some even used their personal drones to look for the missing. However, Texas authorities asked these private drone operators to stop. Their drones could interfere with official rescue aircraft, putting lives at risk.

Beyond the children from Camp Mystic, others are also missing from different locations. This includes four young women whose entire home was ripped away by the powerful currents of the Guadalupe River, vanishing without a trace.
