Modern cars bring a lot of good things, but sometimes they create unexpected problems. One big worry right now is how easily people can get out of a car after a crash or fire. Stories about people dying because they couldn’t escape have made these fears grow. This concern is especially strong for Tesla owners, specifically those with the Model Y. New parents wonder how they would rescue a child if their car caught fire after an accident.
This problem has put Tesla under a microscope. Even governments, like China’s, have pushed the company to address these safety issues. Many Tesla owners are now looking for ways to make sure their cars are ready for emergencies. They want to avoid repeats of past tragedies where people died trapped inside.
Late last week, a worried Reddit user started a discussion about this. He used the Model Y as a prime example. This soon-to-be father and his wife own a Model Y Juniper. He shared a scary thought: “Imagine an accident happens. The main battery catches fire, the inside fills with smoke, and the smaller 12V battery dies. You use the manual button on the driver’s door to get out. But then, how do you get your child or baby out of the back seat? The other three doors are stuck. You can’t reach their manual buttons from the driver’s seat.” This worry hits home for many families.
Tesla’s front doors have an easy-to-find manual release. It’s right next to the window controls. This means people in the front seats can get out fast, even if the car loses all power. But the back doors are a different story.
The manual release for the rear doors on the 2020-2024 Model Y is much harder to get to, according to Carscoops. To open it, someone needs to pull up a floor mat at the bottom of the door pocket. Then, they push a red tab to remove a plastic cover. After all that, they can finally pull the mechanical cable to open the door. This process would be nearly impossible for a panicked child in an emergency. Even the newer Model Y Juniper still requires removing a plastic cover before reaching the cable.
Drivers Find Ways to Get Out in a Crash
The online community quickly offered some clever ideas. Many Reddit users shared their own handmade solutions. They talked about adding small straps or loops to the hidden rear unlock cable. This makes the cable much easier to find and pull quickly.
One smart suggestion was to run a cord from the back door’s release cable all the way to the front of the car. This would let the driver open the rear doors without having to climb back there.
Reddit user @1983Targa911 shared that he bought a set of “emergency opening straps” from Amazon. These straps were made specifically for this purpose. He explained that they are simple black strips with a red tip that says “emergency door open.” They connect directly to the internal door lever. While these straps weren’t designed to reach the front seats, he noted that this problem could be worked around with a bit of ingenuity.
