Tesla is redesigning the Tesla Model 3 six years after the first vehicle rolled off the assembly line. The upgrade comes for the Model 3 with rear-wheel drive as well as for the “Long Range” version with four-wheel drive and maximum range; the upgrade is not yet available for the performance model. Tesla promises better aerodynamics, new lighting and a completely revised interior. The interior design in particular has not necessarily been a strength of the Tesla when compared to other premium vehicles.
These are the innovations according to Tesla:
exterior view
Optimized aerodynamics: Sharper body lines and aerodynamically optimized surfaces are designed to reduce air resistance and wind noise and increase range. In fact, during our testing, we found the Tesla Model 3 to be a bit noisy and noisier than, say, the Audi E-Tron, despite the latter being a much taller SUV.
New exterior lighting design: Redesigned headlights and taillights.
Two new colors: Ultra Red and Stealth Gray.
Rims/tires optimized for range: Styling with improved aerodynamics paired with quieter tires said to be optimized for maximum range.
inner space
Cocoon Design: Cocoon-like interior with higher quality materials like real aluminum and textile fabric etc.
Customizable ambient lighting
seats: The ventilated front seats and heated seats on all other seats are fully integrated into the automatic climate control.
Quiet interior: 360° acoustic glazing, improved suspension bushings, seals and sound-absorbing materials are designed to make the interior quieter.
center console: Redesigned center console with aluminum trim, storage space and two wireless charging docks for mobile phones. Charge laptops and mobile devices with one front and two rear USB-C charging ports, each with up to 65 watts of power. Bluetooth.
New audio system: For the maximum range models, the system includes 17 speakers, two subwoofers and two amplifiers. The audio system of the rear-wheel drive versions works with 9 loudspeakers, a single subwoofer and an amplifier. Native support for Spotify, Apple Music and Tidal. Additional and more powerful microphones should ensure improved sound quality for telephone calls.
rear monitor: The new 8-inch display for the rear integrates controls for the air conditioning, ventilation and audio/video system.
Leverless steering wheel: The steering wheel levers are replaced by haptic switches and physical buttons, which should give the steering wheel a tidier image. As with the latest Model S and Model X, the “Smart Shift” control automatically selects the correct direction of travel for launch.
touch screen: The 15.4-inch touchscreen in the center of the dashboard has the same size but offers more usable space thanks to a narrower bezel. It has a customizable user interface.
connectivity: Tesla promises 50% improved cellular performance without giving details. There are also 2 WiFi ranges, dual-band WiFi capabilities (2.4GHz and 5GHz).
Security: improved side impact protection.
Price and start of sale
The Model 3 upgrade starts in Germany at 42,990 euros before government subsidies. Deliveries of the Model 3 with rear-wheel drive and the version with all-wheel drive with maximum range will begin in late October in Europe.
