Terrorist Drone Attack in Colombia Downs Helicopter, Kills 12 Police

Colombia: Drone attack kills 12 police and downs helicopter

A mission high above Colombia’s wild landscapes turned tragic this Thursday. Twelve police officers lost their lives. They were part of an anti-drug team. Their helicopter was struck while clearing coca fields. This happened in the Amalfi municipality, a remote corner of Antioquia in the northwest.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro first shared news of the incident. He initially reported eight dead and eight injured. But the situation on the ground was far more grim. Hours later, authorities updated the count. Twelve police officers were confirmed dead. The rugged terrain made evacuation nearly impossible.

Officials told the EFE agency about the harsh reality. “It was not possible to remove the injured or the bodies,” they stated. This mountain wilderness held its secrets tight. The attack occurred in a remote, difficult-to-reach area. Recovery efforts faced significant challenges.

The Anti-Narcotics Police helicopter flew over rural Amalfi. It was then reportedly hit by a drone. This sudden strike forced the crew to make an emergency landing. The method of attack marked a dangerous escalation in the region’s long-running conflicts.

President Petro quickly pointed fingers. He declared the event “an act of war.” He blamed the “Central General Staff’s Front 36.” This group is a key splinter faction of the FARC. They are known to operate in northeastern Antioquia.

Antioquia Governor Andrés Julián Rendón moved swiftly. He activated the full hospital network for the injured. He also reminded everyone of another major player in the area. The Gulf Clan, the country’s largest criminal group, also operates there. Their presence adds another layer of complexity to the region’s security.
