Kevin Gausman pitched seven sharp innings, and the Toronto Blue Jays became the most recent team to shut out the New York Yankees, beating the AL East leaders 4-0 on Friday.
The Yankees were limited to four singles and didn’t get a single runner past second, losing for the 14th time in 18 games. They have been shut out three times in the last six games and five in the last 13.
Aaron Judge and his teammates were shutout just six times in the first 107 games of the season.
Teoscar Hernandez homered to help the Blue Jays close within eight games of New York itself. It’s the closest they’ve come to first place in the division since June 13.
Gausman (9-9) gave up four hits and walked one in a job that included seven strikeouts. It was his third scoreless performance in four starts.
In those four starts, he has a 1.75 ERA.
Lourdes Gurriel Jr. had an RBI grounder in the third before Alejandro Kirk led off the fourth with a single off Jameson Taillon (11-4). Hernandez came in to hit a long home run to left-center field.

Cubs 8; Brewers 7
Rookie Christopher Morel and Patrick Wilson each had two-run homers as the Chicago Cubs beat the Milwaukee Brewers 8-7 on Friday night for their fourth victory.
Morel slammed his blow down the left-field line in the sixth, giving the Cubs the lead for good, during a game of give-and-take on a warm, windy day at Wrigley Field.
Nick Madrigal had three hits and scored twice for Chicago.
Andrew McCutchen hit his third home run in four days for Milwaukee, while Hunter Renfroe hit a majestic two-run homer, hitting the video screen in deep left field.
Rowdy Tellez added a solo homer for Milwaukee, which entered the game three games behind St. Louis, the leader of the NL Central and one shy of the final wild-card spot in the Old Circuit.
Franmil Reyes hit a triple that drove in a run. He has been unstoppable in his nine games with the Cubs since they drafted him on Aug. 8.
Before that, Cleveland had released the 27-year-old designated hitter, who has now racked up extra-base hits in those six games, including two homers, a pair of triples and three doubles.
Reliever Michael Rucker (2-1) pitched a scoreless inning for the win and Brandon Hughes pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save.
The loss went to Hoby Milner (3-2), who received Morel’s 12th home run.
