Tennis Legacies: Novak Djokovic

‘The Best In The History Of Men’s Tennis’

Any lover of tennis will know Novak Djokovic, and plenty place bets on him to win when they look at Fanduels Tennis odds. However, Djokovic has a complicated legacy, despite being likely one of the best players on the courts!

Even by the standards of his career, filled with trophies and jaw-dropping performances, he’s never left an easy legacy behind him. He had noted that he sees life as a ‘great learning curve’.

He has seen wins in so many tournaments. He has had countless Grand Slam Singles wins. In the Australian open he has 9 wins since 2008, in the French open he has had 2, Wimbledon, 6, and the US Open, 3.

With a career record of 989-199 in singles, and has ranked number 1 in 2011 for singles, there is no surprise he has such a high reputation.

In his career, he boasts a legacy of wins, astounding play, and bringing home trophy after trophy.

He rivals some of the best players in the Tennis scene; Nadal, Federer, Murray, Wawrinka, Tsonga, and so on.

Having only started his professional career from 2003-2005, he has worked his way up and started winning titles very fast.

However, anyone who has paid attention to the news, and online media will know that Djokovic leaves behind a legacy that is about much more than just his game on the courts.

A Complex Legacy Off Court.

As with any famous sportsperson, or any famous person, their legacy is not just in the game, it is off it too. Many sportspeople start their legacy outside of their career doing charitable work, doing TV, movies, or radio.

But, not every person had a legacy glimmering in hope and positivity, and this can be said for Djokovic. While his legacy on the courts is astounding, and there is no doubt of his elite skill as a tennis player, his legacy outside of the courts is a little sourer, and it is becoming even sourer as time goes on.

Mistakes made in other situations can easily taint the career of a person such as Djokovic, but more on this later.

A Legacy Battle.

Let’s not forget that his legacy is not a sole runner, there are many more tennis players who also have legacies to uphold. He faces the impossible task of winning popularity battles against his rivals Federer and Nadal, all the time.

Of course, before Djokovic even came on the scene, Federer and Nadal were dominating the courts. His rivals were winning titles like no tomorrow.

It makes it all that harder for him with the many complexities of his career that have revolved around his games and the coronavirus pandemic. One such example was the aborted Adria Tour that was staged in Serbia at the start of the pandemic and ended when a whole host of players caught the virus.

Let us not forget that his efforts to start up a new players’ union are also another complexity of his legacy. He does often mean well, but it does not always come off this way.

He repeatedly gets himself into these complex situations, and while there are always two sides to every story, it can be hard to look past it sometimes.

There was the tour he had in Serbia, trying to raise money for those in need, and that ended up going the wrong way. The player’s union, he has been trying to start, is an attempt to get more prize money for the smaller players, but it comes across the wrong way.

It doesn’t help his case that his rivals have been such great ambassadors, and when Djokovic entered the scene, he destroyed a lot of dreams by simply being so good.

Of course, Djokovic suffers a lot from messy situations, and yet he has got himself into another.

Djokovic entered Australia in early 2021, however, he did not enter vaccination, and was denied entry into Melbourne. It would seem his career could take a beating due to this situation, as could his legacy.

Although he did classify for medical exemption due to recently having recovered from the virus, it has caused a global uproar.

This uproar could certainly harm Djokovic’s popularity worldwide, and his legacy will become even messier. He has certainly made his mistakes, and most of them over the last two years, but his legacy in his skill on the courts is still one of an amazing athlete.
