Temba Bavuma Breaks 104-Year-Old Record in World Test Championship Final

South Africa made history by winning the World Test Championship 2025 final against Australia by five wickets. The Australians had set a target of 282 runs, which the South Africans achieved on the fourth day, thanks to Edin Markram’s century and captain Temba Bavuma’s half-century. Bavuma also broke a 104-year-old record as a captain.

Bavuma’s performance as captain has been impressive. He has become the only captain in Test history to win nine matches without losing any. He broke the record of Australia’s Warwick Armstrong, who had won eight matches without losing any in 1920-21.

In the match against Australia, Bavuma played a crucial role in both innings. In the first innings, he partnered with David Bedingham to score a half-century. Bavuma scored 36 runs, but his dismissal led to a collapse of the South African team. In the second innings, while chasing a target of 282 runs, Bavuma scored 66 runs and partnered with Edin Markram to score a century. Markram scored 136 runs.

Under Bavuma’s captaincy, South Africa ended their 27-year drought of winning an ICC trophy. The last time they won an ICC trophy was in 1998. Bavuma’s leadership has been instrumental in this victory, and he has made a name for himself in the history of Test cricket.
