Taylor Swift’s father, Scott Swift, is now on the road to recovery. He recently underwent a significant heart procedure. We can confirm Scott had quintuple bypass surgery about a month ago.
The news first broke from TMZ. Sources close to the family shared that Scott, 73, was joined by his wife, Andrea Swift, 67, and their children, Taylor, 35, and Austin Swift. The family was there supporting Scott through his surgery. This serious medical event followed a routine health check-up. Scott and Andrea have been married for 37 years.
A doctor advised Scott he needed the heart procedure. This type of surgery, a coronary artery bypass, creates a new route for blood flow. It helps blood get around a blocked or partly blocked artery in the heart. Medical experts, like those at Mayo Clinic, explain it uses a healthy blood vessel from another part of the body. This vessel is then attached to bypass the blocked heart artery. The goal is to improve blood flow to the heart muscle.
Taylor has always been open about her strong bond with her parents. Over the years, she has shared deeply personal family health updates with her fans.
Back in 2015, Taylor revealed her mother, Andrea, had been diagnosed with cancer. Taylor shared this news on Tumblr. She wrote that she usually processes big life events and then writes music about them. But this was something her family felt fans needed to know right away. She explained doctors found Andrea’s cancer during a routine check-up, one Taylor had encouraged her mother to get.
Taylor mentioned her mother wanted to keep details about her condition private. However, Andrea wanted fans to understand why she might not be at as many concerts during Taylor’s tour. She had a major fight ahead of her.
When her mother’s cancer returned, Taylor shared her thoughts in a personal essay. She wrote for Elle in 2019 that her mother’s illness taught her what "real problems" are. Before this, she used to worry about everyday ups and downs. Now, her energy, stress, and prayers are focused on truly important matters.
Taylor also shared that her father had faced his own cancer battle in the past. She didn’t give many specifics, only stating that both her parents had dealt with cancer.
Later, while receiving cancer treatment, Andrea was also diagnosed with a brain tumor. Taylor spoke to Variety in 2020 about this difficult time. She said everyone loves their mom, but her mother is truly her "guiding force." Taylor consults her mother on almost every decision. Discussing her mother’s illness was a very significant step.
Taylor described the brain tumor diagnosis as a "really hard time" for her family. She noted that the symptoms of a brain tumor were completely different from what they had experienced with cancer before. Taylor even wrote the song "Soon You’ll Get Better" on her album Lover about her mother’s health challenges.
