Taiwan: China’s maneuvers around the island are “irresponsible”, says a senior US commander

Tensions between Beijing and Washington are not easing. China’s military exercises over Taiwan are “irresponsible”, said Tuesday, August 16 an American commander during a round table in Singapore. Vice Admiral of the United States Seventh Fleet, Karl Thomas, notably claimed that missile fire had grazed international shipping lanes.

Karl Thomas also drew a parallel between the threat to Taiwan and the way China acts in the South China Sea. “If you don’t question [les agissements de la Chine à l’encontre de Taïwan]it can become like the islands in the South China Sea [qui] have now become military outposts”he said.

US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi on the island in early August angered Beijing. China then launched the largest military maneuvers in its history around Taiwan. For five days, the army deployed warships, missiles and fighter jets, simulating a blockade of the island.
