Taiwan: China continues its military exercises, which were to end on Sunday

The Chinese army announced Monday, August 8, the continuation of military exercises near Taiwan, again to protest against the visit to the island of the elected American Nancy Pelosi. Beijing had begun on Thursday, the day after the departure from Taipei of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, maneuvers “live fire” in six large areas all around Taiwan.

The exercises organized in this configuration were due to end Sunday noon, according to China’s Maritime Security Administration. But maneuvers were still underway on Monday. “The People’s Liberation Army (…) continues to conduct practical joint exercises in the sea and air space around Taiwan, focusing on joint anti-submarine and sea assault operations”said in a press release the command of the eastern theater of operations.

The American Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, had denounced the “total disproportion” of the Chinese reaction and in particular of these maneuvers, during which China fired missiles. After criticism from the G7 and the United States, he published a joint statement with his Japanese and Australian counterparts calling on Beijing to stop these military exercises.
