Understanding the Vehicle Replacement Refund in Baja California
If you replaced your car’s license plate in Baja California before January 11, 2025, you may be eligible for a refund of up to 80% of the amount you paid, depending on your car’s model year.
How Refunds Work and Available Discounts
The Government of Baja California has introduced new provisions for vehicle replacement in 2025, which came into effect on January 12, 2025. If you have already paid for the replacement without a discount, you can request a refund. The amount of the refund will depend on your car’s model year, with discounts ranging from 50% to 80%.
Discounts by Vehicle Model Year
* 80% discount for vehicles with a model year of 2010 or earlier
* 75% discount for vehicles with a model year of 2011 to 2019
* 50% discount for vehicles with a model year of 2020 to 2022
* 100% discount for people with disabilities, regardless of the vehicle’s model year
Additionally, there are discounts for owners who have a second vehicle:
* 75% discount for vehicles with a model year of 2010 or earlier
* 50% discount for vehicles with a model year of 2011 to 2019
* 25% discount for vehicles with a model year of 2020 to 2022
Other Benefits
In addition to discounts, there are other benefits, including:
* 100% discount on fines generated until the entry into force of the decree
* 100% discount on surcharges for omission of the State Tax on possession or use of vehicles generated before January 12, 2025
* 100% discount on issuance or exchange rights for circulation cards corresponding to the year 2019 or earlier
Obtaining a Refund
If you have already paid for the license plate change, you can request a proportional reimbursement of the difference generated by the discounts. To do so, you must present the payment receipt at the State Revenue Collection offices during the decree period, which ends on June 30, 2025.
