Tensions within the Indian cricket board could easily rise ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup. This is because Team India only has three T20 matches left before the T20 World Cup and these three matches will be against Afghanistan this month. Here, the selectors cannot decide on the right combination of the Indian team for the World Cup, nor can they decide who should be included in the squad for this tournament to be held in June. The biggest problem is that now Rohit and Virat have also expressed their desire to play in this World Cup. In such a situation, team selection will be the biggest challenge for BCCI.
A PTI report quoting a BCCI source said Kohli and Virat have made it clear that they want to take part in the T20 World Cup in June. The report also revealed that chief selector Ajit Agarkar will also speak to Team India head coach Rahul Dravid, captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli and two other selectors ahead of Team India's announcement for the Afghanistan T20 series.
However, with this in mind, it is not certain if Virat and Rohit will be part of the Afghanistan series. Team India has to play a 5-match Test series against England starting January 25. In such a situation, the experienced players of the Indian team will definitely take a break from the T20 series against Afghanistan.
The PTI report also revealed that the Afghanistan series will not answer all the questions related to Team India's T20 World Cup squad. In such a situation, special attention will be paid to the performance of 25-30 players during the IPL and the T20 World Cup squad will be selected from them. A senior BCCI official told PTI, “Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya are not fit.” In such a situation, one cannot draw much conclusion from the Afghanistan series. Everything will be decided only after the first month of the IPL.
