Syria: a Briton, ex-wife of a jihadist, begs the United Kingdom to let her return

Six years after joining Daesh, she begs the British state to let her return. Shamima Begum, a 22-year-old young woman, has appealed again to the UK, the country where she is from, to ask for permission to return to the territory.

In a filmed interview with Good Morning Britain, the young repentant once again defended herself from being a “terrorist”.

“I thought I was doing the right thing as a Muslim”

“The reason I came to Syria was not related to the violence, it was not because I wanted to be a terrorist. It was because I thought I was doing the right thing as a Muslim. I didn’t want to hurt anyone in Syria or anywhere in the world, ”she explained at the channel’s microphone. ITV.

In 2015, the teenager, then 15, left the country for Syria accompanied by two friends. She had married there a jihadist of Daesh, of Dutch origin, eight years her senior.

But today, the young woman claims to regret having left the United Kingdom, but also having lost her British nationality, from which she was deprived in 2019 for reasons of national security.

“I am ready to go to court, to confront the people who made these allegations and to refute them, because I know that I did nothing in the (organization) of the Islamic State except being an mother and wife, ”she continued. The young woman also said that she “would rather die than return to ISIS”, before adding: “the only crime I committed was having been stupid enough to join Daesh”.

“I could help you in your fight against terrorism”

“I think I could help you a lot in your fight against terrorism because you clearly do not know what you are doing,” she finally assured, addressing Prime Minister Boris Johnson directly.

After fleeing Daesh, Shamima Begum joined a Syrian refugee camp in 2019 where she gave birth to her third child, who died a few weeks after birth. Her first two children, born in Syria, also died.

In February 2019, the former jihadist wife spoke for the first time to several British media. But she had appeared this time dressed in a black veil falling to the feet and had shocked by his words across the Channel. The young woman had notably spoken of “retaliation” for strikes by the Western coalition against Daesh to qualify the Manchester attack.

In February 2021, the British Supreme Court refused his return to the UK, ruling that as long as Shamima Begum would pose a danger.
