Sydney Sweeney detailed the demanding dietary changes she underwent to gain 35 pounds (16 kg) for her starring role in the upcoming biopic, ‘Christy.’ She portrays legendary boxer Christy Martin in the film.
The actress had approximately two and a half months to achieve this physical transformation. She described the preparation as an "enormous task."
Sweeney discussed her diet during an appearance on Sirius XM on Wednesday, October 29. She stated that she "ate everything" to reach the required weight.
Her regimen included consuming "tons of snacks," which led to her receiving the nickname "smuckers" on set. She also drank many protein shakes, admitting she did not enjoy them. Sweeney confirmed that egg whites and chicken were significant parts of her meals.
Beyond the physical, Sweeney spoke about the "immense weight" of portraying Martin, who is now 57. She called Martin’s story "supremely important to tell," highlighting her as "the ultimate underdog" who changed women’s boxing.
Sweeney explained that she felt every detail and decision in her portrayal was crucial. Having Martin alongside her during filming was described as "the greatest gift."
She praised her relationship with Martin, noting that she could always approach her for advice. Martin offered excellent tips during fight scenes, even shouting specific punches for Sweeney to execute.
Earlier, Sweeney told Vanity Fair in September that the experience left her feeling "very strong and powerful." She found joy in immersing herself in another person’s story.
Despite having trained in jiu-jitsu, grappling, and kickboxing in her teens, Sweeney found boxing postures and techniques challenging. She learned that boxing is entirely about footwork, unlike grappling.
The transformation also altered her body shape considerably. Sweeney revealed she outgrew her clothes, going from size 23 to size 27 in jeans.
Her breasts and glutes significantly increased in size, which she found "crazy!" The ‘Anyone But You’ star expressed pride in the "incredible experience," emphasizing how "incredibly strong" she felt.
‘Christy’ is scheduled to premiere in theaters on November 7.
